CONSUELO TUPPER

La novela policial, al girar en torno a la resolución de un crimen, tematiza el acto mismo de leer, tal como afirma el escritor argentino Ricardo Piglia. Visto de esa manera, la lectura de una novela sería equivalente a la búsqueda de un sentido, a la resolución de un misterio, en donde el escritor es criminal y el lector, detective. Realizar una acción de arte y exhibir los materiales que dan cuenta de ese proceso -como es el caso de esta muestra- también tematiza un aspecto que, de todas formas, le es inherente a toda creación artística: la experiencia del hacer.

 

En la performance realizada por Consuelo Tupper, la artista pareciera llevar a la acción el argumento de una novela policial que no ha sido escrita. Una novela que se va armando en la medida que van ocurriendo los hechos. Los objetos que componen su obra (imágenes, correos, y otros documentos) vendrían a ser los vestigios de esa acción, pero también las pistas para la resolución de un misterio. Incluso la descripción del sueño, montada en una de las murallas, se presta a ser interrogada con ese mismo propósito -baste recordar los estados oníricos a los que se sumergía el detective Dupín, o el sueño diseñado por Salvador Dalí para la película Spellbound de Alfred Hitchcock.

 

Es notable que, al interpretar el argumento de esa novela policial inexistente, la artista elija asumir el papel de detective que descifra los signos, y no en cambio el rol de criminal, que conoce y resguarda el sentido que hay detrás de ellos. Visto de esa manera, la autora y performer vendría a ser la lectora de su propia trama y acción. Esa situación tan compleja es similar al acto de soñar, en donde también se ven imágenes y experimentan sensaciones creadas por la misma persona que sueña. Imágenes y situaciones a las que también más tarde se intenta otorgar un sentido, una premonición.

The police novel, when revolving around the resolution of a crime, thematizes the very act of reading, as affirmed by the Argentine writer Ricardo Piglia. Seen in that way, the reading of a novel would be equivalent to the search for a meaning, to the resolution of a mystery, where the writer is criminal and the reader, detective. Carrying out an art action and exhibiting the materials that account for this process -as in the case of this exhibition- also thematizes an aspect that, in any case, is inherent to all artistic creation: the experience of doing.

 

In the performance by Consuelo Tupper, the artist seems to take to the action the argument of a police novel that has not been written. A novel that is articulating itself as the events are happening. The objects that make up her work (images, emails, and other documents) would become the vestiges of that action, but also the clues to the resolution of a mystery. Even the description of the dream, mounted on one of the walls, lends itself to being questioned for that same purpose - it is reminiscent of the dream states to which the detective Dupín would submerged, or the dream designed by Salvador Dalí for Alfred's Hitchcock film Spellbound.

 

It is notable that, when interpreting the argument of that non-existent police novel, the artist chooses to assume the role of detective who deciphers the signs, and not instead the role of criminal, who knows and protects the meaning behind them. Seen that way, the author and performer would become the reader of her own plot and action. This complex situation is similar to the act of dreaming, where you can also see images and experience sensations created by the same person who dreams. Images and situations that also later try to give meaning, a premonition.
